Motion Sensor Placement: Test the Path, Not Just the Room
Place a motion sensor by testing walking paths, mounting height, obstructions, heat sources and false-trigger conditions for the exact sensor.
Motion sensors detect movement according to their sensing technology and mounting position. A sensor that works well for someone walking across a hallway may respond differently when a person walks straight toward it, when a pet moves nearby or when warm air reaches the sensing area. Start with the manufacturer’s manual for the exact model.
Mount the sensor where it can see the event you care about: a path through a hall, a doorway or an area that should trigger a light. Avoid aiming it at heat sources, moving curtains or other conditions the manual warns against. Do not place one near a security-critical area and assume it has full coverage without testing.
Test at normal times of day. Walk the expected route from different directions, wait for the configured reset period, and observe whether lights or alerts occur as intended. Change one factor at a time. A reliable sensor setup includes a manual fallback, especially for stairs and other places where immediate light matters.
