Matter Controller vs. Thread Border Router: Two Different Jobs
Understand the distinct roles of a Matter controller and a Thread border router before assuming one smart-home device can do both.
Matter is an application-layer standard for smart-home devices; Thread is a low-power mesh networking technology. A Matter controller manages Matter devices within an ecosystem. A Thread border router connects a Thread network to another network. One device can provide both roles, but the names are not interchangeable.
Before buying, list the exact devices and ecosystem you plan to use. Confirm whether the controller supports Matter in the way you need and whether a Thread border router is required for a Thread device. Do not assume that a logo on one product guarantees all roles, all regions or all platform features.
Keep commissioning, local control and remote control as separate questions. An ecosystem may add features through software updates, and a device can depend on a particular home platform.
