CPU vs. GPU Bottleneck: Test the Game Before Buying Hardware
Diagnose a CPU or GPU limit in a game using repeatable settings, frame-time data and one controlled change at a time.
“Bottleneck” is a useful shorthand only if it describes a measured limit in a specific game, scene and settings preset. Every PC has a limiting component at any instant. The question is whether that limit is responsible for a problem you can feel, and whether changing hardware would improve the way you play.
Make one repeatable test
Use the same game section, resolution, graphics preset and background tasks for each run. A built-in benchmark is convenient when it is consistent; a repeatable route through a game can work too. Record average frame rate, but also look at frame times or low-percentile performance if the monitoring tool provides them. A high average can still feel uneven when frame delivery is inconsistent.
Do not compare a busy multiplayer match to an empty practice scene and call the difference a hardware diagnosis. CPU demand can change sharply with simulation, player count and draw calls.
Change resolution before you buy
As a diagnostic, lower resolution or GPU-heavy visual settings while keeping the same test. If frame rate rises substantially, the graphics workload is likely the main limit in that scenario. If lower resolution barely changes performance and the CPU is heavily occupied in the relevant workload, CPU-side work may be the limiting factor.
This is a clue, not a verdict. Monitor overlays can report utilization differently, games can have engine caps, and background tasks can distort results. Check for frame-rate limits, power modes, thermal throttling, driver issues and storage activity before shopping.
Interpret the result in context
A GPU running near full utilization is not inherently bad; it is often what you want in a graphically demanding game. A CPU does not need to show 100% overall usage to limit a game because one or a few threads may be busy while others are not. The useful outcome is a comparison of the same scene under controlled settings.
