How Much RAM Do You Need? 16GB, 32GB and 64GB Explained
Choose RAM for everyday work, gaming, editing or virtual machines. Compare 16GB, 32GB and 64GB, then check memory pressure and upgrade compatibility.
For a new general-purpose computer, 16GB is a practical starting point. Consider 32GB for gaming alongside other applications, frequent media editing or heavier multitasking. Move to 64GB or more when large projects, virtual machines or measured memory use justify it. These are buying guidelines, not a guarantee that every application will fit.
An existing 8GB computer does not become unusable because a buying guide recommends more. If it handles your workload comfortably, there may be nothing to upgrade.
Choose by the work you do together
RAM holds active data while applications run. Insufficient capacity can force the system to move more data between memory and storage. Additional capacity helps when memory is the constraint; it does not automatically accelerate work limited by the processor, graphics hardware or storage.
Use the following ranges as a shortlist, then check the current requirements of your own software.

Intel's gaming guide recommends at least 16GB and suggests 32GB for gaming with streaming or other background activity. Its older game examples are not a current requirements list, so check the games you intend to run.
Adobe's current Windows Premiere requirements give a more specific workload example: 16GB recommended for HD media and 32GB or more for 4K and higher. That is Premiere guidance, not a rule for every editing application or a direct comparison with Apple unified memory.
Check an existing computer before buying
Open the operating system's memory monitor while doing a normal demanding session. On Windows, Task Manager's Performance view shows memory use; on macOS, Activity Monitor includes Memory Pressure. Observe the system during the slowdown, not only immediately after startup.
Look for repeated pressure alongside symptoms such as sluggish application switching. High usage alone is not proof of a problem because operating systems also use available memory for caching. Compare the same work with unnecessary applications closed. If performance does not change, investigate other constraints before ordering RAM.
Verify the upgrade path
Check the exact computer or motherboard manual for memory generation, form factor, maximum supported capacity and recommended slot arrangement. DDR generations are not interchangeable. Desktop DIMMs and laptop SO-DIMMs also differ, and some computers use soldered or otherwise non-upgradable memory.
A spare slot is not a promise that any module will work. For systems with replaceable modules, use a configuration the manufacturer supports. Mixing kits can introduce configuration limits even when headline speed and capacity match. Follow the motherboard's documented slot order rather than choosing slots by appearance.
Capacity and speed are separate decisions. Set the capacity you need first, then choose a supported speed and configuration. For local AI workloads, check whether the application needs system RAM, dedicated GPU memory or a supported unified-memory platform; these are not interchangeable quantities.
A reasonable buying decision
Choose 16GB for ordinary work when it meets the software requirements, 32GB when your simultaneous workload benefits, and 64GB when you can name the project or application that needs it.
