AI File Upload Privacy: A Checklist Before You Share a Document
Review AI file-upload privacy before sharing a document: data sensitivity, account type, retention, training use, access controls and deletion options.
Uploading a file to an AI service is a data-sharing decision. Before you do it, identify what the file contains: personal information, financial material, customer data, source code, health information, contracts or confidential work can require a different tool or approval process from ordinary public text.
Read the current product policy for the account type you use. Consumer, business and organizational plans can have different retention, training and administrator controls. Verify whether the service stores the file, extracts its contents for a feature, shares it through a connector or offers deletion controls. Do not treat a chat interface as a private local folder.
Use the minimum necessary material. Redact or substitute data where that still permits the task, and do not upload an entire archive to answer a narrow question. Review who can access the account and connected services. If your organization has an approved AI process, follow it; this checklist does not replace contractual, legal or security review.
